Orpingtons are a large, dual purpose heavy breed which lay 200+ eggs a year. They are good for both egg production as well as large table sized birds. Although they don’t tend to go broody, they can mother many chicks as they are a much larger bird. They can be quite friendly and tend to not be flighty. Our birds are excellent layers suppasing the average for the breed and will go broody once a year if not at all. Our birds are good quality and we are currently working on their size. Current colors are blue, black, splash and buff.
Wyandottes are a large, dual purpose breed which lay 200+ eggs a year. They are good for both egg production as well as large table sized birds. They don’t tend to go broody, and do tend to be less sociable than other breeds. They are good for colder climates as they have a rose comb which can tolerate frosts much better. Our Wyandottes have excellent lacing and our Silvers have good shape. Current colors are black, blue and splash laced gold as well as silver laced (black laced silver). We also have white in the bantam variety and multiple new colours in the works.
Araucanas are a medium sized, light breed bird which lay 150 blue to green eggs a year. Well known for their eggs, Araucanas can add color to your egg basket. Our Araucanas are excellent layers, pullets start young and will lay 5-6 times a week for their first few years. Current colors are blue, black, cuckoo, lavender, lavender cuckoo, partridge bantam and duckwing bantam. Our cuckoo lay mostly green-olive eggs, the blue/black lay a mix of blue and green and the rest all lay blue eggs.
Leghorns are a medium sized, light breed bird which lay 300+ white eggs a year. The best heritage breed egg producers, leghorns will lay just about every day in the right conditions. They do tend to be quite flighty, but are great foragers and will spend their days in search of snacks in the grass. Current colors are blue, black, splash , white, exchequer, brown, columbian, cuckoo, blue cuckoo, buff, pile, and white bantam.
Campines are a light breed which lay around 150 white eggs a year. Campines are quite a flighty breed, and as they forage a lot are best to let free range. Ours do tend to lay around 200 eggs a year, all year round and their eggs are massive. Currently, only gold Campines are bred here.
Silkies are a light breed that lay 100 or so tinted to cream eggs a year. By far the best pets and mothers, silkies are a great addition to any flock if you want to cuddle, or raise more chickens. Our Silkies are in a mixed cage, with black, blue, white, buff and lavender causing a nice mix of separate and mixed colors.
Hamburgs are a light breed. Their origins aren't 100% certain but they are most likely from Holland. Large amounts of development were done on them in England and they were the main laying bird till leghorns became popular. They lay around 150-200 white to cream eggs yearly. They are an extremely flighty breed so a free range lifestyle is best for them. We currently breed Silver and Gold Spangled, Black and Blue.
Frizzles are not a breed, but rather a mutation of the feather causing the feathers to curl up rather than lay flat. Our frizzles originate from mostly pekin and araucana breeds, with both bantam and light breed mixed stock. Eggs may be green, blue or tinted. Current colors are black, blue, white, brown/buff and cuckoo. As this breed is still being worked on, small amounts are available.
Olive Eggers are originally a cross between Araucanas and Shavers, with several other breeds added in. They are a breed which are still being worked on here. They produce olive to green eggs, and a lot of them! A great way of adding color to your egg basket, without reducing productivity. Currently birds purchased will have a 50% chance of laying Olive eggs, 25% brown and 25% green. Current colors are black and brown although birchen colouring is in there as well as newly added blue, columbian and wheaten.
Minorcas are the largest of the light breeds. They are extremely good layers laying close to 300 large white eggs yearly. Originating in the Menorca region of Spain they are apart of the Mediterranean breeds. They are similar in looks to Orpingtons but have a slimmer build and are smaller. We currently breed blue, black and splash in the single comb varieties.
Plymouth Rocks are a large heavy breed originating in Massachusetts, U.S.A. Sebrights are a bantam breed originating in England. They are a true bantam meaning there is no full sized version of them. They are good layers for their size and don't often go broody. They are quite flighty and the roosters can be territorial tending to bite people etc. We currently only breed the gold version but silver and citron is also available.
Barnevelders are a heavy breed originating from the Netherlands. They are beautiful birds. They only come in laced versions here in NZ, with single and double lacing, gold and silver with black, blue and splash lacing. They are similar to Wyandottes but have a darker complex and single combs. They lay 200+ tinted to brown eggs yearly. We currently breed single laced gold and double silver laced.
Polish mostly come in bantam versions nowadays in NZ but their full size counterparts are a light breed. They are known for their massive head tufts and friendly nature. They originated in Europe and lay around 150 white to cream eggs yearly. They're good mothers and are more ornamental birds than producers! We currently are working on a gold laced version in the bantam variety.
Rhode Islands are a large, dual purpose heavy breed originating in Rhode Island, U.S.A. They are good table birds as well as being good layers of brown eggs. They were a base breed in the current commercial breeds. They are one of the most common breeds in New Zealand and are mostly seen in Red (RIR) although white is also available. We currently breed the red colour.
Sussex are another large, dual purpose heavy breed. Originating from Sussex, England they are one of the most common breeds here in NZ. The most common colour is the light Sussex (Columbian pattern) but Buff, Coronation and Speckled are also available here. They lay around 200 tinted eggs yearly and are excellent table birds. We currently have the light and buff varieties.
Anconas are a light breed originating in the Ancona region in Italy. They are excellent layers of white eggs and arguably just as good as Leghorns. They are a flighty breed so suit a free range lifestyle. They all show the mottling gene and black, blue, splash and red are seen in the standard. We currently breed the black and blue varieties
Houdans are a French light breed. They are similar to the Polish, same head tuft and comb although all Houdans should have a beard and five toes. They are quite a friendly breed and will lay around 150 white to cream eggs yearly. Currently they only come in a mottled version here in NZ.
Faverolles are a dual purpose heavy breed. They originated in France and are known as having the best tasting meat out of all the breeds. They are also good layers, laying 250 tinted eggs yearly. They have large beards and are of a friendly nature. They will occasionally go broody but not very often. Currently you can only get the Salmon
