Orpingtons are one of the most popular breeds here in New Zealand and you can see why! They are an extremely friendly breed and make great pets. Our lines are excellent layers and make great mums as they can take lots of eggs and go broody often. We have been breeding them since we started back in 2017 and now have sho
Orpingtons are an old English breed created by William Cook in the 1880's. They were bred as a dual purpose breed and will lay between 200 and 250 cream, tinted or pink eggs yearly. Here in New Zealand the majority of birds have lost their size and feather density however show lines are still at what they should be. Here in NZ black, blue, splash, buff and lavender varities are popular and rather common however cuckoo and white are standardized (although rare) and work is and has been done on a wider range of colours usually seen in the states such as silver laced, gold laced, mottled and jubilee.
Our black Orpingtons we have been breeding from the start and came from our original blue Orpingtons. They were seperated off in 2024 and since we have added in outside stock to improve size. They are excellent layers and are on par with our current blue flock.
Blue was our original colour with birds first purchased back in 2017. They were far from standard at the start but we are now getting good quality birds regularly. They are slightly more broody than our blacks for some reason though! They are mostly a dark laced bird however lighter birds do pop out. We currently breed them blue to blue so do expect 25% splash and 25% black from fertile eggs.
Splash also originated from our original blue birds. It is the least popular colour of the five colours we breed although egg production and quality are the same. They vary from a washed out splash to a darker, 30-40% blue bird (which is what we are aiming for).
Our buff orpingtons are a more recent addition arriving in September 2023 and June of 2024. They are the worst quality birds shape wise but we do have some of the better quality birds in NZ. We have selected a much better shaped rooster this seaosn who is also quite dark so we are hoping for better quality offsping this seaosn. Laying wise they tend to lay more eggs in a week than the BBS lines however don't lay as long in the year than the BBS colours.
Lavender is the newest addition and 2025 will be the first season breeding them for us. They have been purchased rom Deb's Heritage Poultry and are quite nice birds. We will expand on the group as lavender is one of the more popular breeds but has a small amount of breeders selling them here in NZ.
